The Chinese Television System (CTS) is a television production and broadcasting company in Taiwan that engages in delivering high-quality news, entertainment, and drama series. CTS was selected as the main broadcasting service provider of the 2017 Summer Universiade games that took place in Taipei, Taiwan from 19-30 August 2017. As this was the first time a Taiwanese broadcaster has been responsible for a large-scale international sporting event, CTS set up the International Broadcasting Center (IBC) to provide sustainable broadcasting operations during the Summer Universiade games.
As it was Taiwan’s first time hosting the 2017 Summer Universiade (the second-largest international multisport games event in the world), CTS established the IBC to provide suitable resources for the broadcasting project.
Besides operating the primary broadcasting work, IBC also needed to manage hundreds of terabytes of videos generated from broadcasting the Universiade games. Not only did they need to full back up the digital content created from the games, IBC was also required to submit five copies of the data to the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade Organising Committee. As the broadcasting task was time-and-schedule-oriented in nature, the IBC team needed to focus heavily on their primary broadcasting work. Therefore, during the preparation stage prior to the event, it was imperative for them to find a reliable storage solution that could help reduce their data backup workload to a minimal level.
After consulting QNAP’s technical specialists, the IBC decided to deploy one QNAP TS-1685 and five TS-1635 units to build their storage and backup solution. The combination of TS-1685 and TS-1635 provides an exceptional solution for backing up large high-resolution digital video data created from the broadcasting project, as the units features three major benefits: scheduled backup, high-capacity storage and fast file transfer speeds.
The IBC’s centralized storage system was responsible for storing all the digital content, while their QNAP TS-1685 and TS-1635 were used to perform backup tasks. The IBC used their QNAP TS-1685 and TS-1635 to back up high-resolution video data. At the first step of their daily backup routines, new data would be transmitted to the QNAP TS-1685 after the day ended. Afterwards, the TS-1685 was scheduled to replicate and backup the data to five TS-1635 units at 4:00am every morning using QNAP’s Real-time Remote Replication (RTRR) service, ensuring the data was fully preserved.
The TS-1685 and TS-1635 both feature 10GbE support for high-speed and flexible connectivity, providing the bandwidth required for transferring large high-resolution media files. With 10GbE connectivity, the NAS are capable of delivering lightning-fast data throughput to accelerate the backup process for a large amount of high-resolution media files.
The IBC’s TS-1685 and five TS-1635 all were loaded with high-capacity 10TB hard drives, configured with RAID 50 and RAID 6 respectively. The NAS not only provide great storage potential for large data but also excel in data protection, delivering unmatched reliability.
The IBC team were very impressed by the benefits from using the TS-1685 and TS-1635 during the Taipei 2017 Summer Universiade. By automating backup with RTRR and the high-speed file transfer, the QNAP NAS greatly simplified and streamlined their backup tasks.
